They next moved to the Hugh Earhardt place where they lived during 1901 and 1902. William purchased the Earhardt farm probably using a legacy from his father. But he lost it and was never to possess land of his own again. This event seemed to mark the beginning of a pattern of tenant farming and moving which would continue throughout their lives. Edward next moved to the Barry Binkley farm where they were living in 1903-04. In 1905 and 1906 they were tenants on the John Harper place where Aileen was born. The family moved next to the land owned by Gil Reasoner where Vallie Mae was born. The next two years were spent on the Charlie Eggstine place in Joelton. In 1910 and 1911 they moved to the Theodore Lavandick farm and William Ray was born there. When Launa was born in 1912 they were living on the George Bracey place. In 1913 they moved to the Belle Newland Place and then to the John Harper land in 1914 where Edward Sterry died. He has no gravestone other than a small concrete base made by his son, Raymond, with “Sterry” scratched in it. Edward’s widow, Mary, managed to support the family now ranging in age from one and a half to Sixteen and they eked out a living as share croppers. In 1915 they lived on the Jim Greer place on the ridge near Ivy Point Church. From here they moved to the Charles Wingo place in Perigen Hollow where Lucy and Tracy Robb married in 1916. No information is available as to where the family lived after Vallie Mae was married in 1926 until about 1935 when Gene, Ray and their mother lived at the Woodard place on Greer road about one mile from Ridgetop. After the death of Tracy Robb in 1937, Lucy and her two children lived with Mary and her two sons at the Woodard place from just before Christmas until early spring 1938. In 1938 Mary and her two sons lived in the Smiley Hollow at the Morgan place. They then lived one summer at the old Adams place east of Ridgetop and then moved to the E E Robb farm and lived in the house that was called the “Old Place”. [Tracy Robb]
