Shared note
In 1911 census Stephen Helps aged 15 was at St Andrews College, Bradfield, Reading in Berkshire. Stephen Helps Starey was my father, an early aviator. He was the youngest of John H Starey's six children. WW1 Service: Enlisted 1.1.1915. Second Lieutenant Shropshire Light Infantry; Field Captain King's Shropshire Light Infantry; Wounded at Hooge, Belgium 1915. He was a natural pilot and that resulted in his being held back in 1915 as an instructor.  Also, he was barely fit, having been seriously wounded in the battle of Hooge and subsequently suffering from Spontaneous Pneumothorax.  He took to flying whilst on sick leave and joined the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) 1916 for that reason. His mission in France was reconnaissance in SE5s for the Armies on the ground. [The Royal Aircraft Factory SE5 was a British biplane fighter aircraft, the A denoting the improved model.] He was seriously injured in a crash of his SE5A due to engine failure in 1918. He received  the Victory, British and Star Medals. He read medicine at Trinity Cambridge and trained as Doctor at George's Hosp. under Sir Crisp English. But gave up medicine when his father died in 1928 to look after the family estate at Milton Ernest Hall and Far Eastern plantations. [His grandfather, Benjamin Helps Starey, built Milton Ernest Hall, Bedfordshire in 1853.] Stephen Starey was the first farmer to put farm tractors onto rubber tyres and pioneered new crop drying techniques. The Hall was requisitioned by the armed forces in 1941. Glenn Miller was stationed there with the US Airforce during the war. He later entered Public Service and was appointed as Deputy Lieutenant (DL), Justice of the Peace and Chairman of the Juvenile Bench. His career in public service led him to be High Sheriff of Bedfordshire in 1948. He taught Astro Navigation to the Air Traffic Control (ATC) in WW11. He was a lay Canon of St Alban's and he was for many years County Commissioner of the Boy Scouts.   [HarveyStarey] Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificates [Ancestry] Starey, Stephen Helps The Manor, Bodenham, Herefordshire Born 26th Jan 1896 at Newraylia, Ceylon Nationality: British Rank: Lieut.
