Shared note
Left leasehold property in will of his father George, proved 1771: Item. I give and devise unto my son JOHN STERRY the house wherein he the said JOHN STERRY now live lately erected by me during the lease and paying a proportionable chief rent for the same. However, John never appears to have paid any rent tithe, although his brothers, Richard and Thomas, who also inherited leasehold land from their father, were paying it from 1775. However, from 1780 a Joseph Sterry appears in tithe rental record as occupier of own house, garden and orchard. Richard and Thomas Sterry also appear in the tithe rental book for the same year. If this is the same Joseph Sterry (brother to Richard, Thomas and John) who did not appear in his father's will and who was receiving extensive parish relief from 1767-1775, perhaps he finally became more financially secure and took over his brother John's inheritance.
