Shared note
David grew up at Rowley, Massachusetts and upon the outbreak of the Revolutionary War he enlisted in May 1775 in the Continental Army. He was discharged in Jan 1777 at Trenton, New Jersey. He received a pension in later years. On a proud note he testified in 1818, " I was at the taking of the Hessians at Trenton" -- Washington's brilliant night-time cross- river operation of December 26, 1776. David settled about 1782 in Pownalborough, Lincoln County, Maine, and moved in 1791 to Starks, Somerset County, Maine. In Starks he took 85 acres of 'wildlands' on Lemon Stream and established a farm, living in two successive log houses which he built. The present house on the farm was built by his son Edward in 1821; it was sold in the 1930's by David's great-great-grandson Frank D. Sterry. David's second son Samuel lived in a second house located on the same farm. About 1815 David moved to Hallawell, Maine and remained there until about 1824, when he moved to Boston, Massachusetts. He is listed in the city directories in the early 1830s as a shoemaker, being already about 75 yrs old by this time. Upon his wife's death at Boston in Oct 1833 David moved back to Starks, Maine, and there by Jan 1834 when he requested his War pension be sent to Maine location. He died nine years later in Starks aged 88, and was buried in the village cemetery with no marker. The cemetery later was moved and the grave lost track of. Boston, MA, USA: Wright & Potter Printing, 1896-1908.] Revolutionary War Pension Application 1818 - David Sterry I David Sterry, aged sixty three years, a citizen of the United States, born in Rowley, Massachusetts, but now of Hallowell in the District of Maine, upon oath tesitfy and declare that in May 1775 I enlisted as a private soldier into the continental service of the United States for the term of eight months, into the company commanded by Capt John Baker and regiment commanded by Col. Little of the Massachusetts line. Under this enlistment I served until the last of November 1775 and then reenlisted as a private soldier into the continental service of the U. States for one year into the company commanded by Capt Thomas Mighill and regiment commanded by Col Baldwin of the Masachusetts line. Under this last enlistment I served out my year and took my honorable discharge from the army in January 1777 at Trenton New Jersey. The discharge I have not preserved. I have said that I enlisted for the last year in November 1775 but my year's service was to begin and did begin on the first of January 1776 until which time I served under my first enlistment. I was at the battle of Trenton. I served from the first in the continental service the full term of twenty months. I am indigent and in need of the bounty of the government. And I do hereby relinquish all my claim to every pension heretofore allowed to me by the laws of the U. States, if any; but I am not to my knowledge borne on any pension list whatever. I request that I may be put upon the pension list for the District of Maine. David Sterry Commonwealth of Massachusetts Kennebec, SS On the thirty first day of March AD 1818 David Sterry above named after having been carefully examined, made oath to the truth of the foregoing declaration by him subscribed. Before me, Nathan Weston, Jnr, Chief Justice of Court of Common Pleas, Second Eastern Circuit [Support for application and character reference also given by James Snow amd Nathaniel Johnson] Additional signed declaration by David Sterry: I David Sterry within named do upon oath further declare that I am sixty five years of age - that my family consists of myself and my wife Catherine aged seventy years subject to the rheumatism and bad cough which she has had for thirty years - ... the year 1776 in Col Baldwins .. and was at the taking of the Hessians at Trenton. Signed David Sterry. Subscribed and sworn to July 20 1820 before me Nathan Weston Jnr S. J. C. David Sterry also supplied information on his estate and income: 'a small house and shoe maker's shop, which are unfinished or but partly finished, the land on which they stand does not belong to me and I pay ground rent for the same yearly; the buildings are worth eighty dollars. I have a few articles of old furniture, which with my shoe makers tools are worth ten dollars. Being old and infirm I derive but a very small income from my labor or trade as a shoemaker (not being able to work but a small part of the time) not more than twenty dollars per year is received by me for my shoemakers work, including the cost of the stock. Except the above I have no other property besides my necessary clothing and bedding. I am not sixty six years of age. David Sterrey. Pension was granted. On the 14 Jan 1834 David Sterry asked for his pension to be transferred to his new residence in Starks, Maine. David states that he was placed on the pension roll of the Distrcit of Maine from whence he moved to Boston Massachusetts where he resided for about 8 years past and has now removed to Starks. The Dept of Interior, Bureau of Pensions, Washington DC provided the following information on the military history of David Sterry in response to a request from Charles H Long of C.
