Walter Smith in an unpublished document titled "A Survey of the Possible Origins of William Williston Sterry [25 May 1991] stated "[Samuel] is a candidate to have been the father of William Williston Sterry." In a letter that William Williston Sterry published in a Syracuse NY newspaper in 1883, William states his family moved from Albany NY to Syracuse NY in 1825. William was the middle of three children. In the 1830 and 1840 US census Samuel Sterry and family were living at Salina. Salina is about 5km from Syracuse and today is a suburb of Syracuse. There are no other Sterrys living in New York State anywhere close to Syracuse at this time. 1830 census Salina (Onondaga County) (M19_100/29) Samuel Sterry (one free white male 15-19, two free white males 20-29, one free white male 30-39, one free white male 40-49, two free white females under 5, one free white female 20-29, one free white female 30-39) 1840 census Salina (Onondaga County) Samuel Steery (one free white male 50-60, 1 free white female 40-50, 1 free white male 5-10) If he was indeed the father of William Williston Sterry then Samuel had at least three children as stated in a letter by William Williston to the Sunday Times, Syracuse, New York in 1883.
