The Ipswich Journal - Tuesday 14 December 1875 LOWESTOFT.INQUEST.- Mr. Chaston, coroner, held an inquest on Saturday afternoon at the Great Eastern Hotel, on the body of Kate Madeline Sterry, aged nine weeks, daughter of Mr. Sterry, coal merchant. On Monday night last the child was apparently in good health, but on Tuesday morning the nurse thought the child looked pale and called her mistress. The child was then warm, and taken into bed by its mother, but she shortly afterwards turned cold. Mr. Chubbe, surgeon, believed the child died from natural causes, and the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.

INDECENT LIBEL Sterry Sentenced 60 DAYS AND DEPORTATION TORONTO, Wednesday - Judge Coatesworth to-day sentenced Ernest V Sterry to 60 days' goal, to be followed by deportation to England. Yesterday, Sterry was found guilty of publishing, in a pamphlet known as 'The Christian Inquirer' a scandalous, unpious, blasphamous, profane and indecent libel of and concerning God, the Holy Bible, the body of the Scriptures and the Christian religion. [Advocate, Burnie, Tasmania, Friday 18 Mar 1927 p1 There is a lengthy account of this case in the book "The African Canadian Legal Odyssey - Historical Essays. The chapter entitled "Ethelbert Lionel Cross - Toronto's First Black Lawyer by Susan Lewthwaite describes how Ernest Victor Sterry was convicted of blasphemous libel in addition to theft. Cross acted as defence council for Sterry throughout the four month trial which attracted national and international attention. He was found guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in prison, to run concurrently to the sentence he was serving for theft. He was also recommended an order for his deportation. After his release from Ontario Reformatory at Gualph in November 1927 he remained in the city, despite the efforts of the Toronto police to have him deported. He set himself up as an art dealer and, although he remained involved in the rationalist cause, he kept a relatively low profile. Patrick, Jeremy (2010) "Canadian Blasphemy Law in Context: Press, Legislative, and Public Reactions," Annual Survey of International & Comparative Law: Vol. 16: Iss. 1, Article 9, 'Sterry's Early Life' p131 In the words of a Toronto Star headline, Eugene Victor Sterry "learned to be atheist at his mother's knee." Sterry was the thirteenth of twentytwo children, though only seven of his brothers and sisters lived to maturity. He grew up in the heavily industrialized city of Norwich, England, where he attended a Baptist school for six years, followed by two years at a Catholic school. His father, a wealthy shipowner, was a devotee of the 18th century Swedish Christian mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg. However, Sterry's mother was, in his words, "an avowed atheist." She was a "keen botanist" and would travel hours to hear lectures by the famous freethinkers of the era such as Herbert Spencer and Charles Bradlaugh. Religious and social issues were often discussed over the family dinner table, and Victor apparently gravitated more towards his mother's views than those of his father. Soon after coming of age, Sterry married and then (leaving his wife behind) moved to New Zealand, where he spent a couple of years in the real estate business. He had been able to travel and live on his father's money until his father suddenly cut him off completely, accusing him of being a "------- Socialist." Sterry did not want to live in England, but he could not persuade his wife to join him in New Zealand. They talked about moving to the United States, but she insisted on living somewhere under the British Empire. Finally, the impasse was ended when they decided to relocate to Canada. They settled in Toronto in the summer of 1909. Canada provided a fresh start, but Sterry had a tough time of it. He drifted between jobs, working as everything from a census taker, to a road breaker, to a real estate agent. His work in real estate caused Sterry trouble down the line. In 1924, he entered into a deal with a Chinese laundryman named Joe Ying in which Sterry was to oversee the construction of a new building for Ying's cleaning business. Ying gave Sterry a $200 deposit toward the construction, but no work was ever done. Ying believed Sterry simply took the money and disappeared. Sterry, on the other hand, claimed that he passed the money along to the developer, who absconded to Chicago with it. Ying filed charges against Sterry for theft, but for the next few years, the police showed no particular interest in pursuing the allegation.
