Shared note
Samuel probably lived in London or in the vicinity. Attended the Felstead School, at Felstead near Chelmsford, in the 1780s. Joined the 'Bermondsey Volunteers' in 1799 in defence of the king against rebellion or riot. Samuel was a physician and for over forty years was the main benefactor and organizing genius behind the School for the Indigent Blind in St George's Fields, London, for which activity he insisted on anonymity. After his death he was compared with Florence Nightingale because of his contribution to medical progress and mercy (Churchman's Magazine, Jan. 1857). Towards the end of his life he permitted a portrait which earlier had been painted of him to be hung in the School's board room, but with the false caption of "John Sterry" under it. (The portrait years later was on exhibit at a London museum, suggesting it had artistic merit.) There is a lithograph portrait of Samuel Henry Sterry in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The gallery's collection can be searched at http://www.npg.org.uk/live/search/ Lisa Burke, the Archive & Library Assistant at the NPG kindly provided considerable detail on the provenance of this portrait as follows: "Thank you for your email regarding the lithographic print of Samuel Henry Sterry by Richard James Lane (D22422) in the National Portrait Gallery collection and its provenance. The below information is taken from our reference collection listings. The National Portrait Gallery has 865 lithographs of portraits and figure studies by the Victorian lithographer and sculptor Richard James Lane (1800-1872). The majority of this collection, including the print of Samuel Henry Sterry, was given to the National Portrait Gallery by Dr Austen Lane Poole (a descendant of Richard James Lane) in 1956-7 as my colleague Helen Trompeteler informed you. This collection of lithographs belonged to Richard James Lane himself and was passed down within his family until Dr Austen Lane Poole gave them to us. The words underneath the portrait are ‘Samuel Henry Sterry, May 13 For nearly fifty years a most valued member of the committee of the school for the indigent blind.’ The lithographic print we have in our collection by Richard James Lane, which is dated 1856, was done after a portrait of Samuel Henry Sterry by the artist George Patten (1801-1865) and his name is noted on the left hand side. We don’t have the portrait of Samuel Henry Sterry by George Patten in our collection and I’m afraid after checking our index of sitters in portraits, our sitter boxes and artist portfolios have found no information about its history or present whereabouts. We have a letter in our manuscripts collection from a B.G.Johns to Richard James Lane regarding his lithograph of Samuel Henry Sterry. The letter is dated September 12 1856. I have given you a transcript of it below. School for the Indigent Blind St George’s Fields, London September 12 1856 My dear Sir I enclose a signature of Mr Sterry’s, which I hope will answer your purpose. The more I think of his picture the more I am inclined to do so with pleasure. You have caught the sunshine without the shadow of a very pleasant face; and while shutting out the cloud you have kept the repose. Believe me dear sir Faithfully yours B S Johns PS I have thought it better to send two signatures. Can you use the one with the date after it? May 13 was his birthday. Richard James Lane, 1800-1872 Engraver and lithographer 865 lithographs of portraits and figure studies by the prolific Victorian lithographer Richard James Lane, mostly published between 1825 and 1850. The collection contains portraits of royal sitters, prominent society figures and theatrical subjects, including a set of illustrations of the actor John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) published in 1826 and a set of 16 portraits of his brother Charles Kemble (1775-1854) published in 1840. The collection comprises 4 sets of lithographs bound into albums, some of which are inscribed and dated by Lane, and the remainder which are loose or in their original wrappers. The majority of the collection was given by Dr Austen Lane Poole, 1956-7. Additional items were acquired from various sources during the early 20th century." Samuel Henry Sterry is likely to be the STERRY that Sterry Street in Bermondsey was named after. Sterry Street still exists and is south east of Borough Station and the church of St George the Martyr and south of Long Street off Tabard St. The earliest map of London discovered to date that shows Sterry Street is Stanford's Map of Central London 1897. Samuel Henry Sterry appears in Pigot's London Directory 1839 as: Sterry, Samuel Henry & Son, surgeons, 10 Grange Rd (Bermondsey) Again in the 1846 London Post Office Directory appears: Henry Sterry jnr, surgeon, 1 Alscot Place, Grange Rd, Bermondsey Samuel Henry Sterry, surgeon, 1 Alscot Place, Grange Rd, Bermondsey In the 1861 London PO Directory appears: Sterry & Sharpe, surgeons, 159 Grange road, Bermondsey SE Sterry, Henry, surgeon, 7 Paragon, New Kent road SE
