Shared note
Possible Smith-Calvert connection [David Sterry] In 1871, William and Harriett and their family, including William Henry, where living at 21 Marshall Street, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough whilst their married son James William lived a few doors away at 27 Marshall Street and their Daughter Sophia Harriett was at 23 Marshall Street with her Husband George Fletcher. The Smiths-not Agnes but including Hilda Mary - were living at 10 Fry Street, off Corporation Street(parish of St. Pauls), Middlesbrough. By 1881, William and Harriett had both died and James William and his family had moved to 7 Garritt Street Linthorpe (in the Parish of St. Pauls) whilst the Fletchers had moved to «b»23 Black Street, «/b»in the Parish of St. Pauls. Henry William and Hilda Mary, now married with son Henry and Agnes Smith M-I-L were living a 9 Granville Street, Linthorpe (parish of St. Pauls), Middlesbrough. Harrietts` death certificate says she died 2nd Dec. 1879 at «b»24 Black Street«/b», Linthorpe, Middlesbrough whilst the informant, her son J. W. Sterry`s address listed as «b»17 Black Street, Linthorpe. «/b»Of course, by now, Hilda Mary was pregnant with Henry Archibald and, as she gives «b»Black Street «/b»as her place of residence on the marriage certificate, it seems possible, if not likely, she too was living in «b»Black Street «/b»at the time of her indiscretion! The 1881 census for Middlesbrough lists 23 male Calverts aged 13 or over. One of these, William Calvert aged 28, was living at «b»15 Black Street «/b»with his Uncle, George Armstrong and his family who were all working in the Iron Works. Of course, there are several other possible "candidates": A Harry Calvert bn 1860 at Northallerton, was boarding at the Crown Hotel, 19 Bridge Street West, Middlesbrough and he worked as a "Billiard Marker" presumably in some sort of Billiard/Snooker Hall. Another, Jas Calvert unmarried bn 1843 Ireland was lodging at 6 Hudson Street, Middlesbrough.
