Shared note
Probably the John listed in List of Apprentices 1710-1762: 57/133 1770 STERRY Jn to Rob Cullington of Wrentham brckl £5/5/- It is probable that this John Sterry is the son of William Sterry [1727-1803] and Elizabeth Mayes on the Lowestoft line who was baptised at Lowestoft in Jan 1757. The census records support this connection. 1821 census Lowestoft Beach John Sterry, 65 Mary Sterry, 55 Children under 20 (2) m (1) f (1) Children under 30 (2) m Total in family 6 (2 under 30) William then aged 21 and John then aged 23 (1 male and 1 female under 20) James then 18 and Amy then 16. In the 1841 census John is at Church Green, Southwold (aged 85, bricklayer) with his son William and grandson David. His wife Mary is probably the Mary Sterry resident at Row 132, Great Yarmouth, aged 75 in the 1841 census and who was buried there in 1845. [Although it is unclear why she would have moved so far from her own family.] It is note worthy that Wrentham is about half way between Lowestoft and Southwold. We also know that Sterry families on both the Southwold and Lowestoft Sterry lines moved in an area cicumscribed within the townships of Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft, Southwold and Beccles. John Sterry's son, James, who was a Master Mariner, is shown in the census records as living in Beccles in 1841, probably moving there about 1840 judging from the baptismal records of his children. The family then apparently moved to Lowestoft about 1860. John Sterry's son, who was a Twine Spinner, had married and moved to Lowestoft by the 1841 census. On the Lowestoft line, we know that John Sterry's brother, George [1766-1829] married and settled in Great Yarmouth. DNA results of male descendants on both lines support the above documentary evidence.
