Shared note
The H. Sterry at 29 Albert St in G.J. Harris’s Forest of Dean Directory 1910, which he owned. Alan Sterrey suspected that his grandfather Henry Sterrey altered the spelling to distinguish himself from the numerous other Sterrys around Lydney, bearing in mind that he was marrying into the Pritchard family who were prosperous traders, owning the Lydney Coal Company for example.   When Alan Sterrey Junior (son of Gregory, grandson of Albert Henry Hector, great-grandson of Arthur, great-great-grandson of Henry) visited us here on 17 October, I told him what Alan Senior had said.   Alan Junior immediately recalled that his grandmother Kitty nee Baxter, wife of Albert Henry Hector, had always been most anxious to point out the extra "e" for similar reasons - the Baxters owned a substantial local haulage company (until their vehicles were requisitioned at the start of the Second World War) and appeared similarly anxious to distinguish themselves from the numerous other Sterrys by emphasising that Kitty had married a "Sterrey."  [Email from Peter Essex, 27 Oct 2011]
