Preface to the Modern Transcription of Burford by the ShropshireParish Register Society, 1915 states: "Adjoining the churchyard (of Nash Township) is Nash Court, belonging to Mr Pardoes - a narrow circuitous lane leads through the townships of Wetmore and Tilsop, and we find the timber dwellings of 'Ferne' fast falling into decay (but with its Jacobean fireplace) turned into a barn for cattle, Tilsop & the Hem, the old home of the Stareys partly destroyed by fire, built by John & Elizabeth Starey in 1682.... All these are interesting as examples of the dwellings of yeoman of England in the Stewart times."
Shared note
It is assumed that John Starie is the son of John Starie [1633-1691] No baptism has been located for this John Starie. However, supporting evidence is as follows. He came from Neen Sollars. Notes prefacing the Modern Transcription of Neen Solars by the Shropshire Parish Register Society state: 'Another parishioner married away was John Starey of Neen who in 1674 married Elizabeth Turdon at Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. The old house at Hem in Burford parish bears their initials and the date 1682. His family are the only Starie family that we know that moved to Neen Sollars. But he is not mentioned in his father's Will [John Starie 1691.] However, he may have been provided for outside of his father’s Will. No baptism has been found either for his presumed sisters, Elizabeth and Ann, although they are both mentioned in their father's Will of 1691. There is a gap in the baptisms of the children of John Starie [1633-1691] and Elizabeth between their son Thomas who was baptised at Burford in 1654 and their son Richard who was baptised at Neen Sollars in 1665. However, the record of baptisms in the Neen Sollars parish register from 1558-1707 have been lost. Some earlier baptisms have been recovered only from Bishops Transcripts. Records generally during the English Civil War and subsquent Commonwealth period 1642-1660 were either lost or poorly kept and many are missing. His own Will reads: John Starie, Burford [Shropshire], Proved 27 Sep 1720. Abstract made by Starie researcher in 1988 as follows. John Starie, Redfoard, Burford, yeoman made 3 Jul 1714 son Thomas Starie, a bachelor, now in Bewdley ... lands in parish of Coreley, son in law Thomas Morrice ... messuage known as Powlters in the township of Tilsop in the parish of Burford in possession of me John Starie, son Thomas Starie senior is sole executor. Probably the 'coz: John Stary of the Hemm forty shillings' one of beneficiaries in Will of Thomas Stary of Burford, 1690/91.
